The Root Recommends: Thor

When it was announced late last year that Idris Elba would play an all-seeing, all-hearing god in the comic book-turned-film Thor, controversy began to swirl. Longtime fans seemed disappointed that Elba would be cast as a Nordic god, claiming that a black actor is a blasphemous representation of the original character.

But Elba didn't sweat the bigotry and went on to play Heimdall, the overseer of the bridge that connects the world of men and the world of gods in this mythical superhero thriller. We fully expect Elba to shut up his haters by delivering an epic performance.

Elba also co-stars with Natalie Portman, who plays a scientist and the main character's love interest. Thor debuts in the U.S. this Friday, May 6.
