Calling all of my movie buffs! The annual New York African Film Festival has begun in New York City, where promising and veteran filmmakers alike come together to show off their latest work. The festival, in its 18th year, will celebrate the richness of the African experience with 15 features and 16 short films.
Running now through May 31, it will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of independence in Sierra Leone and Tanzania. The festival, which is presented by the African Film Festival Inc. and Film Society of Lincoln Center, will run through April 12 at the Walter Reade Theater of Lincoln Center and wrap up at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Rose Cinemas at the end of May.
Why Are They Here? Chinese Stories in Africa and Bondo: A Journey Into Kono Womanhood are just two of the movies that are playing at this year's event. Earlier this year, the United Nations deemed 2011 the International Year for the People of African Descent, and this festival will surely commemorate the best of our Diaspora.
