Vice President Mike Pence continues to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong: in the reproductive organs of American women. While speaking at a luncheon hosted by the anti-abortion organization the Susan B. Anthony List & Life Issues Institute in Nashville, Tenn., Pence said that he believes legal abortion in the United States will end “in our time.”
First of all, can we please unpack the issue of an organization named after one of the earliest women’s-rights advocates being anti-abortion?
Many make the claim that Anthony was against abortion, but others refute that argument. In any case, I digress …
The Hill reports that Pence said, “I know in my heart of hearts this will be the generation that restores life in America. If all of us do all we can, we can once again, in our time, restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”
Shall I go ahead and point out the irony of Pence making a statement on the “sanctity of life” as the very real debate about guns in this country—guns that kill people every single day—wages on without the government wanting to do anything to make change?
And when legal abortion is gone, and women have to go into back alleys to suffer hanger abortions, what about the sanctity of their lives?
What about the children born to mothers who cannot afford them, have no resources to take care of them, and cannot get help from a government that continues to strip bare the social services programs that might give them even the tiniest bit of help? What about the sanctity of their lives?
All this posturing, huffing and puffing centered on controlling what a woman does with her body.
The truth is, Pence doesn’t care about the lives that come after. He only cares about maintaining a patriarchal system that dictates what women can do with their bodies.
