It’s no secret that the American health care system is broken. Sadly, this means patients can’t always rely on hospital staff to give them the best care and advice they need.
During a recent incident, The Four Tops singer Alexander Morris says he experience the failures of our country’s health care system firsthand, and now he is taking action. According to Yahoo, on Monday, Morris filed a lawsuit against Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan, accusing the institution of “racial discrimination” over an April 2023 visit for “chest pain and breathing problems.”
Morris alleges that when he said he was in The Four Tops, the hospital staff “restrained him and ordered a psychological exam,” as they didn’t believe him.
The lawsuit states that staff “wrongfully assumed he was mentally ill when he revealed his identity as a celebrity figure.”
Thankfully, the exam was canceled when a nurse eventually believed him. The hospital offered him a $25 gift card as an apology. Considering how dangerous things could have been for him if this process had gone through, a $25 gift card just ain’t going to cut it for the legendary singer.
Morris joined the classic Motown group in 2019, which may have been a factor in him not being recognized, but it still feels like this situation could have gone horribly wrong.
In response to Morris lawsuit, the hospital made a statement:
“We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind. We will not comment on pending litigation.”
Hospital staff in the Detroit area probably have patients telling them they’re everyone from Diana Ross to Michael Jackson. They’ve likely heard it all, so someone saying they’re in The Four Tops might sound like just another wild tale. In this case, thankfully, it was the truth.
