(The Root) — Think you live in an enlightened, progressive part of the country? Are you sure? Floating Sheep, a website "dedicated to mapping and analyzing user generated geocoded data," is helping you figure it out. The site recently analyzed and geo-tagged 150,000 tweets that contained what they call "discriminatory speech" — racist, homophobic and ableist terms. They plotted their data in a map that shows from which areas of the country such speech is most likely to come.
It may come as no surprise that the majority of hateful tweets analyzed came from the Southeast. The same was true for a similar study done that mapped racist tweets aimed at President Obama after his re-election in 2012.
