(The Root) — The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that the federal ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, was enacted in 1996 and bans the federal government from recognizing state-granted same-sex marriages. That ban has been officially ruled unconstitutional.

After a week of tense news and rulings — a blow to the Voting Rights Act, graphic pictures of the body of Trayvon Martin broadcast on television in the trial of George Zimmerman and the near passage of a bill that would close most of the abortion clinics in Texas — this was welcome news. People took to Twitter to take advantage of the chance to celebrate.
