The Hits and Misses of the Met Gala

Every year the Costume Institute Benefit Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (better known as the Met Gala) in New York City brings out the stars in their most elaborate fashions. This year’s theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass,” and although some immediately thought that Chinese culture would be heavily appropriated, it seems as though most stars in attendance kept it tastefully appreciated.

As with any fashion event, there’s always going to be your hits and misses, and boy, were there both.

Kerry Washington

Most people loved the color of Washington’s Prada dress, but others thought it reminded them of a high school prom frock, or even Pepto-Bismol.

Naomi Campbell

Do we even have to question why Naomi is one of the world’s greatest supermodels? Flawless is an understatement. And Lee Daniels didn’t look too bad himself.

Solange

If you ever wanted to know how it feels to wear  a church fan, just ask Solange. Her Gilles Deacon-designed dress was definitely original and creative.

Taraji P. Henson

Empire’s Cookie kept it simple and sweet, but I would definitely have preferred if she’d put on something with a little more personality.

Zendaya Coleman

Baring her legs in a stunning skirt-and-halter getup, Zendaya, who always opts for a more relaxed style, definitely proved that she can “glam it up” if need be.

Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz

The former couple proved once again that they’re the best of friends and also that they drink unicorn tears for breakfast because they do not age. Definitely the best-looking couple at the gala.

Zoe Kravitz

And of course Bonet and Kravitz’s daughter proves that she gets it from both parents.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade

And runner-up for best-looking couple goes to the Wades—although I’m not feeling the sockless shoes Dwyane is rocking. But that purple on Gabrielle looks regal.

Beyoncé

I’m sorry, but this “I Dream of Jeannie Vomiting Glitter All Over Me” dress was nothing to clamor over. Next.

Rihanna

In today’s “She Slayed” news: That’s exactly what Rihanna did. She came. She saw (those other hideous dresses). She conquered. And I’m pretty sure there was nothing under that coat. Yes, it’s a coat. Chinese designer Guo Pei actually made a dress to go underneath it. But when you’re Rihanna, who needs the whole ensemble?

And for special mention, here’s Fan Bingbing, the actress from The Empress of China. Aside from Rihanna and her themed dress, Bingbing definitely brought culture to the show.
