If you’re not a person who follows politics that closely, you may not have heard of Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) until she made news for going in on her Republican colleague Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and single-handedly coining the phrase “bleach blond bad built butch body” (aka B-6). But the Texas congresswoman has been working hard to make change since she first arrived in Washington in 2023. A member of the House Oversight and Accountability and Agriculture committees, Crockett is quickly becoming a rising star in the Democratic party and one we will certainly have our eyes on during this 2024 election cycle.

After she and other Black students at Rhodes became victims of a series of hate crimes, Crockett decided she wanted to study law. She said it was an attorney at the Cochran Law Firm who she called her ‘shero’ who helped her realize the importance of good legal representation.

“I saw how much help a lawyer could be to somebody at a very confusing time,” Crockett told Darling in an interview.

In 2006, he earned her J.D. at the University of Houston and went on to serve as a public defender, and civil rights and criminal defense attorney. Crockett started her own pro bono law firm in Texas focused on civil rights and criminal defense.

In 2020, Crockett turned her focus to politics and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. While most freshman legislators tend to fade into the background, Jasmine Crockett made her presence known right away.

“Many freshmen, they just kind of sit there. They don’t say a whole lot because they’re trying to learn,” former Texas Democratic Rep. Joe Deshotel told The Washington Examiner. “But for her, the learning curve was very short. I mean, she jumped right in.”

Once in Washington, Rep. Crockett got to work calling out hypocrisy in Washington with GOP members of Congress pursuing an impeachment of President Joe Biden while photos taken by federal authorities of national defense secrets stored in the bathroom of Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago golf club in Florida circulated.

In September 2023, Crockett went viral for pointing out that Trump was keeping classified documents in a very unlikely place.

“Honestly, no one has testified on what crime they believe the President of the United States has committed,” she said. “But when we start talking about things that look like evidence, they want to act like they blind. They don’t know what this is. These are our national secrets looks like in the s*tter to me.”

It took less than a year for Rep. Crockett to see for herself just how dysfunctional things were in Congress. And she used her platform to call out the bad actors in the Republican party.

In an October 2023 op-ed piece for MSNBC, she wrote about how former President Trump manipulates Republicans into holding up the passage of important legislation designed to help Americans and our allies for his own political gain.

“The safety of the United States and the world is endangered because of the former president, and now the chaos caucus,” she wrote.

A May 16 House Oversight Committee hearing will go down in history as the day Rep. Crockett brought the heat to her conservative colleague, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The meeting took a turn for the worse when Greene made a shady comment about Crockett’s eyelashes.

When the committee chair ruled that Greene’s comments were not a violation of House rules, Crockett asked for clarification.

“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” she said. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”

It didn’t take long for her beautifully alliterative shade to go viral and inspire memes, songs and remixes all over social media.

The business major in Crockett did not waste time capitalizing on the popularity of her epic Marjorie Taylor Greene read.

In a May 22 Instagram post, Crockett announced the launch of the Crockett Clapback Collection, a line of tees and other swag bearing the “bleach blonde bad built butch body” slogan. Proceeds from the sale of the products go to help Democratic congressional candidates’ election campaigns.

“This is about making sure that we can raise the monies. It’s so that I can help save our democracy. My money goes to front-liners, people that are in fights to make sure that we can take the House,” Crockett said in an appearance on The View.
