Black Stars Who Took Home Major Trophies in 2023 [Updated]

The most sought-after award shows are underway! Our favorite Black actors, actresses, athletes, designers, directors, and more are scooping up awards left and right. Here are the Black celebs who are getting the flowers they deserve in 2023.

Abbott Elementary has a bright future ahead as far as awards are concerned! The comedy series was nominated for and won Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globe Awards.

Zendaya was not in attendance for the Golden Globe Awards but won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Rue in HBO’s Euphoria.

Quinta Brunson, aka Ms. Janine Teagues in Abbott Elementary, won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Comedy. She also is the creator of the hit ABC series.

Angela Bassett made history by winning the first Golden Globe for a Marvel film. Her compelling portrayal as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won her the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any motion picture.

Tyler James Williams won his first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a comedy for his role as Mr. Gregory Eddie in Abbott Elementary.

Eddie Murphy was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards for his incredible impact on the entertainment industry.

Angela Bassett won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Costume designer Ruth E. Carter won her third Critics Choice Award. She won this year for Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Zendaya was not in attendance to accept her Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Rue in HBO’s Euphoria.

Giancarlo Esposito won his first Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series as Gus Fring in Better Call Saul.

Sheryl Lee Ralph is on an award show sweep this year as she won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series as the teacher, Barbara Howard, in Abbott Elementary.

Niecy Nash-Betts won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. She played Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer’s neighbor, in the series.

Musician and actress Janelle Monáe was recognized with the #SeeHer Award at the Critics Choice Awards!

The Woman King starring Viola Davis, a film about the all-female warriors called the Agojie of Dahomey, won Best Picture at the 2023 African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards.

Director Gina Prince Bythewood of Best Picture, The Woman King, won the award for Best Picture at the AAFCA Awards. Bythewood has also been a writer for Love & Basketball, A Different World, and a screenplay for The Secret Life of Bees.

Jeremy Pope won the award for Best Actor as Ellis French in The Inspection. The Inspection is about a Black, gay man who joins the Marines after being rejected by his mother.

Danielle Deadwyler won the award for Best Actress as Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie-Mobley in the film, Till.

Brian Tyree Henry won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as James in the film Causeway with Jennifer Lawrence.

Angela Bassett was honored with the award for Best Supporting Actress for her outstanding performance as Queen Ramonda of Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Jalyn Hall is the young actor to look forward to seeing according to AAFCA. He won the Emerging Face award after starring in Till, as Emmett Till, and Darious in Bruiser.

Director of the film Emergency, Carey Williams, won the 2023 AAFCA award for Emerging Filmmaker.

The winner of the 2023 AAFCA award for Best Independent Feature is the psychological horror film, Nanny.

Wendell & Wild is a film about two demon brothers getting the help of a teenage girl to fulfill their scheme to get to the Land of the Living. The film won the award for Best Animated Feature.

The Apple+ documentary Sidney about the life of legendary actor, Sidney Poitier, won the 2023 AAFCA award for Best Documentary.

Glass Onion: A Knive’s Out Mystery won the AAFCA award for Best Ensemble including Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom Jr.

French film, Saint Omer, about a novelist who attends the trial of Laurence Coly, won the 2023 AAFCA award for Best International Feature.

The original song by Rihanna, “Lift Me Up”, for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the AAFCA award for Best Song.

Kendrick Lamar’s short film with Taylor Paige, We Cry Together, won the 2023 AAFCA award for Best Live Action Short.

New Moon written by Colman Domingo is the winner of the 2023 AAFCA award for Best Animated Short.

The film Till featuring Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hill, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Douglas Thompson won the Impact Award for the AAFCA Awards.

Michael Ables, the composer for the films Nope, Breaking, Us, Get Out and more is AAFCA’s winner of The Innovator Award.

Hannah Beachler, production designer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, won the AAFCA’s Building Change Award.

Will Smith and filmmaker Antoine Fuqua of Emancipation, won the AAFCA’s 2023 The Beacon Award.

Film producer of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Nate Moore, won The Ashley Boone Award from the AAFCA.

Muni Long won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance for “Hrs & Hrs”.

Beyoncé won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa”.

Steve Lacey won the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album for “Gemini Rights”.

Robert Glasper won the Grammy for Best R&B Album for “Black Radio III”.

Comedian Dave Chappelle won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for The Closer.

Beyoncé won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul”.

The Grammy award for Best Rap Song went to “The Heart Part 5,” by the songwriters Jake Kosich, Johnny Kosich, Kendrick Lamar, and Matt Schaeffer.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was not present to accept the AP Most Valuable Player award due to preparing for the 2023 Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Ronde Barber, who spent his entire NFL career as a cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

Darrelle Revis, a former cornerback for the New York Jets, will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

Former outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos, DeMarcus Ware, has been chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

SZA will be honored as Billboard’s Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music Awards in March.
