At Tuesday night’s second presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris did something that no one expected her to do: she sunk to her opponent Donald Trump’s level. Throughout the debate, she baited Trump by essentially calling him a liar, saying that people leave his campaign rallies out of “exhaustion and boredom” and telling him that military leaders have labeled him a “disgrace.”
Trump is known for name-calling, making up things that aren’t true and intentionally spreading disinformation so he and his allies can have the political upper hand. The violent Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection was a culmination of Trump’s followers believing his lie that the 2020 election was stolen and that he was the real winner. He has done this since he initially started his quest for the White House back in 2015 and throughout his disastrous presidential term.
In response, it seems Dems have finally gotten fed up with taking Michelle Obama’s famous “when they go low, we go high” approach and are meeting Republicans in the basement where they love to dwell.
Harris smoking Trump’s boots on Tuesday was the most recent example, but there have been several others from the party.
Former President Barack Obama infamously mocked Donald Trump’s “weird obsession with crowd sizes” last month at the Democratic National Convention, while his wife and former First Lady Michelle Obama blatantly called out Trump’s history of racism.
“For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black,” Michelle said.
She also poked fun at Trump’s commentary at the June debate in which he stated that immigrants coming into America and “taking Black jobs.”
“Who’s going to tell him that the job [Trump’s] currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs’?” Michelle boldly added to rousing applause.
The Democratic Party has categorized Republicans as “weird” (a quip started by Harris’ running mate Tim Walz that has picked up steam) and have even made petty couch jokes at JD Vance’s expense.
When the Harris-Walz campaign isn’t combatting misinformation, they are also throwing shots online. Last month, their “birthday message” to Vance was deliciously sarcastic in tone: “While we wish JD a happy 40th, the American people will make certain that he celebrates his 41st anywhere but the White House.”
Let’s see if Dems fighting fire with fire will help them keep the White House in November.
