A Texas woman has been taken into custody after police say she shot and killed her sleeping boyfriend before dismembering his body and running to Louisiana.
According to KHOU-TV, Cierra Alexis Sutton was arrested Thursday night and charged with the murder of 32-year-old Steven Coleman, the Baytown, Texas, Police Department confirmed.
Detectives say that Sutton, 30, and the victim had gotten into an argument the evening of Aug. 16. Later that evening, while Coleman was sleeping, Sutton allegedly shot him in the head before cutting up his body with a machete and throwing the remains in various dumpsters.
Friends have reported that Sutton confessed to killing the Coleman, admitting that she dismembered his body because he was too heavy to carry. Sutton’s 10-year-old daughter was apparently inside the apartment at the time of the killing.
Two days later, Sutton went to the Baytown police station and reported Coleman missing.
“She acted like she knew nothing about anything. She was trying to call him, hadn’t heard from him. Family members didn’t get a response,” a neighbor, Mikki Rogers, told the news station.
“There’s always been smiles, talk, no signs of anything that would indicate something like this,” Donald Wooten, another neighbor, said.
Later that month, on Aug. 22, detectives were called in after a male torso was found at a landfill in Baytown. The description of the body matched the description of the victim, although the remains have yet to be positively identified.
Weeks later, Sutton went on the run, fleeing to Louisiana, and dropped her daughter at a friend’s home just outside of New Orleans. Sutton was later found, on Thursday, at an apartment complex in Louisiana and brought into custody.
It is unclear when her next court date will be.
