A San Antonio tabloid is threatening to publish the names and addresses of police officers in the San Antonio Police Department in response to a recent officer-involved shooting that left an unarmed black man dead.
According to KENS5, on Thursday, Antronie Scott, 36, was shot by a uniformed officer who said he thought Scott was armed. The unnamed officer shot Scott once in the chest, killing him. It was later discovered that Scott had been holding a cellphone. No gun was found at the scene.
The editor-in-chief of the San Antonio Observer, Stephanie Zarriello, held a press conference Saturday to announce that officers who shoot unarmed citizens and continually go unpunished shouldn’t be allowed to have their identities remain anonymous.
“Like Ku Klux Klansman with hoods, do everything they can in order to protect their identities for fear of being brought to justice,” said Zarriello, KENS5 reports. “Just as the names and addresses of sex offenders are publicized in order to protect the public from their wicked behavior, we feel that our community has the right to the exact same level of protection.”
A spokesman for the Police Department told KENS5 that it wouldn’t address the Observer’s plans but added that the police are “committed to conducting an unbiased and transparent investigation,” the news station reports.
