A 38-year-old Texas woman has been arrested and charged in the death of a girl who fell from on top of the woman’s car, where she had been forced to ride because her wet bathing suit potentially could have ruined the vehicle’s upholstery, the Daily News reports.
Kisha Young was charged with intoxication assault, which is a third-degree felony, in the death of 12-year-old Octavia Watkins, the report says. She also faces charges of injury to a child and DWI with a child. She was released from jail on $110,000 bond. The child’s mother, a passenger in the car, could also face charges, the News reports.
Octavia suffered severe head injuries from her fall on June 17 and was removed from life support 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, NBC-affiliate KXAS reports. Three other children, ages 8 to 14, who suffered injuries during the incident, were released from the hospital, ABC-affiliate WFAA reports.
A one-minute journey from the Creekside Community Pool in the city of Crowley to a Tarrant County home turned deadly when Octavia and the other children fell off the car as Young turned a corner in her Chevrolet Malibu. The children were wet from swimming, and Young reportedly did not want them inside her car.
Until they were flagged down by a passerby, the two women in the car were reportedly oblivious to the children’s fall, the News says, citing reports from police investigators in Crowley, which lies in Tarrant and Johnson counties, Texas.
“The adults involved are responsible for the children, and whatever happens to them while they are in their care,” Crowley police officer C.C. Meadows said, according to the News.
