USA Today is reporting that a Northern California teenaged father reportedly bit off his infant son’s nose after becoming frustrated by his crying.
Joshua Cooper, 18, was arrested Friday at the home he shared with the child’s mother and other family members and charged with suspicion of child cruelty and aggravated mayhem, Fairfield County, Calif., police said in news release.
"There was a substantial amount of blood," Fairfield Police Sgt. Troy Oviatt said. "It was a fairly gruesome scene."
After 8 a.m. PT Thursday, police received a call from a distraught woman who said her baby was bleeding from the nose, the report says. Police didn't know what happened until they recovered a piece of the child's nose from the floor. A third of his nose is missing.
"The investigation revealed the father bit the child's nose off while he was crying and he was frustrated he was not able to ease the child's crying," Oviatt said.
The infant was listed in stable condition at Oakland Children's Hospital. Doctors also discovered that the child also suffered a skull fracture and a brain hemorrhage and are trying to figure out how the other head injuries occurred.
The crime scene had no indications that drugs or alcohol were a factor, Oviatt said.
