News correspondent Tamron Hall and Prince shared a special friendship that Hall has been open about since his passing. But it’s that friendship that caused Hall to step away from filling in for Lester Holt at NBC Nightly News on Thursday and Friday, when the details of Prince’s death were revealed.

According to Page Six, the friendship was deemed a conflict of interest because of the reporting needed on the singer’s death.

“Tamron and NBC News execs discussed it and decided together it was best for her to not fill in [Thursday or Friday],” a source told Page Six. “She’s been open about her friendship with Prince, so for her, this is more than a news story. She’ll fill in again soon.”

On Thursday the medical examiner revealed that Prince’s death was caused by an accidental overdose of fentanyl, an opioid drug used to treat pain.
