On Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy In Kenya shared that 40-year-old Kevin Kangethe—who is suspected of murdering his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu—has been taken into custody. Mbitu, who was just 31 years old at the time of her death, was reported missing on Oct. 30, 2023. Her body was found two days later at a parking garage at Boston Logan International Airport.
A warrant was issued for Kangethe’s arrest following the killing. The warrant stated that the Massachusetts State Police responded to Logan’s Central Parking Garage at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2023, and found Kangethe’s vehicle, a white 2013 Toyota Venza, inside.
Police “observed a large amount of blood” inside the car, a State Police report said. Additionally, there were “large slash wounds” on Mbitu’s face, neck and chin areas and a puncture wound to her side, the report detailed.
In a move that shocked many, Kangethe then flew off to Kenya. State Police spokesperson David Procopio explained that the suspect was captured “based on our arrest warrant and after extensive coordination between” several law enforcement agencies.
Following Kangethe’s apprehension, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden released a statement saying: “I’m extremely grateful to the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the FBI, Kenyan law enforcement agencies, the Kenyan government and the Massachusetts State Police for bringing the person accused of Margaret Mbitu’s brutal murder into custody.”
Hayden also said that “their tremendous and untiring efforts will provide Margaret’s family and friends the opportunity to see Kevin Kangethe face justice for this terrible crime.” Currently, Kangethe is expected to be extradited to the U.S. at a later date that has yet to be disclosed.
On Tuesday morning, Mbitu’s family said that they were notified of the arrests by the district attorney and state police. They also stated that they are “thankful for all of the prayers.”
