The couple were at a concert in California when he placed his hands on her belly and felt the baby kick. Only problem was, neither of them knew she was pregnant.
"I felt the baby kick and I looked at her and said, 'I think you're definitely pregnant,'" Jarryd Gorman told CBS Los Angeles. "We need to go see someone straight away."
They did, and that is when Abby Wake and her boyfriend, Gorman, found out that not only was he right, but she was eight months along in the pregnancy.
According to the couple, there had been minimal signs, which they both had attributed to other things: Wake's slight weight gain? Could be bloating. Weird stomach noises? She figured it was gas.
"I had no symptoms," she said.
"[The doctor] was just, like, '32 weeks,' " Wake recalled. "We were like, 'I'm sorry?' "
Wake told the news station that throughout her pregnancy, she had an irregular period and that the movement she did feel felt more like "gurgling" than "kicks."
"It is more common than most people think," Payman Joseph, an obstetrician-gynecologist who is tending to the couple's unexpected, soon-to-be addition, told CBS 2. He noted that in the majority of cases he's seen, women who were unaware that they were pregnant were usually a bit heavier than Wake, adding, "She's very thin compared to a lot of the other women that I've seen this in."
But the couple may have a bigger concern than throwing together a baby shower and the rush job for the nursery. Gorman, who is from Australia, may not be here for the baby's birth. According to CBS 2, Gorman's "visa is set to expire at the end of the month," and the couple is working on keeping the new father in the U.S.
The shocking news has left the couple little time to prepare. To help alleviate some of the financial stress, they have set up a GoFundMe page, which they're calling a "virtual baby shower."
Although several things remain uncertain for the couple, there are two things they are sure of: They now know they are having a boy, and they also know his name will be Isaac.
