“Living Single” remains one of the most popular and influential series in TV history, because it never felt like a sitcom. Most of the time, we felt like we were just hanging out with our girls and getting into trouble. The chemistry and connection among the four leading ladies is one of the reasons we keep talking about a revival. Recently, Erika Alexander and Queen Latifah had a fun reunion during the “American Fiction” star’s appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show.”
During the talk show’s “Final Five” segment, the hip-hop legend surprised her former co-star by popping up on video to ask the unconventional five questions. Alexander got emotional about her old friend’s appearance, telling Barrymore, “It’s been a while since I’ve seen her. I love her.” “Congratulations on ‘The Equalizer,’ she’s a mommy now, everything.”
When the “Ladies First” artist asked about the most memorable “Living Single” behind-the-scenes moment, Alexander had an answer that was both inspiring and hilarious. She explained that the stars’ wardrobe room visits would often go off the rails, but it was all about “body positivity.”
“We used to have so much fun and we would undress in front of each other and compare breasts,” Alexander said. “And I had the smallest in there, which is saying something, because they were some big begonias going all around.”
She added that the women, who paved the way for representing “bigger women” on TV, “really cheered each other on.”
“To actually go and have our first person that saw us in wardrobe go, ‘Look at that! Look at how they’re sitting up, those are fine,’” she continued. “We gave ourselves a lot of encouragement. So, yes, I remember that a lot. A lot of body positivity.”
It’s the sisterhood and love that made “Living Single” such an influential, unforgettable TV classic. Even when Max and Regine were throwing insults at one another, we always knew they had each other’s backs. Let’s hope this mini-reunion is the first step in a full-fledged “Living Single” comeback with lots of guest stars.
In the meantime, if you want to catch up on the shenanigans of Khadijah, Max, Regine and Synclaire, you can binge “Living Single” on Hulu and Max.
