Marion “Suge” Knight has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted-murder charges in connection with a hit-and-run incident in January involving two men, one of whom was killed. Currently Knight is behind bars with a $10 million bail imposed by Los Angeles County Judge Ronald Coen.
Knight’s attorney, Matthew Fletcher, asked the judge to lower the bail, but the request was denied. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Fletcher stated that Floyd Mayweather would post the bail for his longtime friend. “We think Mr. Mayweather is going to win the championship and then come champion the day again,” Fletcher said. “They’re good friends … we believe it will happen.”
According to the Associated Press, Knight’s trial will begin July 7. If convicted, he faces life in prison. Fletcher asserts that his client was attempting to flee a potential ambush when the hit-and-run occurred. Terry Carter was killed and Cle “Bone” Sloan was injured. Earlier in April, Sloan refused to identify Knight in court, stating that he was not going to be responsible for putting Knight in jail.
