USA Today reports that a Manhattan assistant district attorney told the court that inconsistencies in the 32-year-old accuser’s story led to the decision. “Our inability to believe the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt means we cannot ask a jury to do that,” said Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon.

Kenneth Thompson, the lawyer for the hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo (who accused 69-year-old Strauss-Kahn of rape), told the press over the weekend that he expected the charges to be dropped in the case. Thompson accused District Attorney Cyrus Vance of turning his back on Diallo, adding that he also turned his back on critical forensic, medical and other physical evidence that would have helped the case.

While Strauss-Kahn may have walked away from criminal charges, Diallo is suing him in civil court. And authorities are looking into another attempted-rape allegation in France.
