The iconic singer/songwriter who is unquestionably the greatest love poet in American history (don’t debate this) surprised British concertgoers by announcing that he will take a break from performing to undergo a kidney transplant this fall.

Sixty-nine-year-old Stevland Hardaway Morris, known worldwide as musician Stevie Wonder, made the announcement in London’s Hyde Park after performing his timeless hit “Superstition” at the British Summer Time concert, the Associated Press reports. Wonder wanted to ease the concerns of his adoring fans after the Detroit Press and media personalities revealed that the star was suffering from health issues.
“I’m going to be doing three shows then taking a break,” said the legendary hitmaker whose catalog spans six decades. “I’m going to have surgery. I’m going to have a kidney transplant in September of this year.”
“I have a donor, It’s all good,” Wonder continued. “I want you to know, I came here to give you my love and to thank you for your love.”
In spite of his health concerns, Wonder has kept a vigorous schedule performing all over the world, including an appearance at the memorial for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle. He remains one of the most decorated artists in music history, having been nominated for a whopping 74 Grammys.
He is one of only two artists to win Album of the Year Grammys three times (along with Frank Sinatra) and the only artist to win the award for three consecutive album releases. Aside from 25 Grammys, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Gershwin Prize, and an Oscar, an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Wonder was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, so he’s done pretty well for himself.
He also wrote Songs in the Key of Life, the greatest album ever recorded.
