After a disappointing eighth-place finish Wednesday in the 1,000-meter, U.S. Olympic speed skater Shani Davis tried to bounce back in the 1,500-meter race Saturday in Sochi.
But the Chicago-born skater finished 11th, clocking 1:45.98, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The 31-year-old did not win a medal in three races. He and other members of the U.S. speed skating team had hoped to see a time difference after dropping their high-tech suits and returning to those worn during the World Cup season. But they had no such luck.
Brian Hansen, of Glenview, Ill., clocked 1:45:59 for seventh place; Joey Mantia, clocked 1:48.01 for 22nd; and Jonathan Kuck clocked 1:50.19 for 37th place.
It’s unclear whether Davis will compete in the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. By that time, he will be 34, the Tribune notes. Only six skaters that age have obtained Olympic medals, including two men, most recently Rintje Ritsma of the Netherlands, who was 36 in 2006.
Expectations were high. Davis garnered gold medals in the 1,000-meter and silver in the 1,500 meter at both the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games.
