Residents of Houston are still grappling with the horrific devastation brought on by Hurricane Harvey last weekend, with many families being displaced and living in designated shelters in the city. But one friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is out there trying to at least comfort the kids and bring smiles back to their faces during this frightening time.
Twitter video shared by a reporter from local media outlet Spectrum News showed the unidentified hero going around cheerfully handing out stickers and entertaining some of the hurricane’s youngest victims at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston.
It was a simple act of kindness that brought smiles not only to the kids’ faces but also to the faces of the adults around them. Spidey is out here really demonstrating that you don’t need to wear a cape to be a hero.
According to ABC News, as of Tuesday afternoon there were more than 10,000 people living in the downtown convention center, in a space where the Red Cross had only planned to hold 5,000. That means only 5,000 cots were available and nearly half of the evacuees had to sleep on the cold tile floor of the 2-million-square-foot center.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a Tuesday-evening press conference that officials were working to make sure that those displaced had enough cots and were working to reduce the population in the center by using the Toyota Center as an additional shelter.
