John Choi, who is the county attorney for Ramsey County, Minn., overseeing the case of Philando Castile's death, said that Don Lewis, a black defense lawyer, would be joining his team to help weigh possible charges emerging from the death of Castile earlier this month.
According to Choi, Lewis will “provide an independent perspective bolstered by the authority of this office,” Reuters reports.
Choi said that the American Civil Liberties Union as well as the lawyer for Castile's family had requested that the governor and attorney general of Minnesota name a special prosecutor to take on the case.
According to Reuters, Choi also said that before deciding whether to bring charges or send the case to a grand jury, prosecutors first have to wait for the investigation results by the state's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
