In December Noah made his first appearance on the show and discussed being biracial and growing up in South Africa. โ€œI never thought Iโ€™d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa,โ€ he said with a smile. โ€œIt kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days back home.โ€

In an interview with the Times, Noah expressed excitement about his new role. โ€œYou donโ€™t believe it for the first few hours,โ€ Noah said. โ€œYou need a stiff drink, and then unfortunately youโ€™re in a place where you canโ€™t really get alcohol.โ€

After 16 years on the show, Stewart announced his retirement in February and said heโ€™s pleased with the appointment of Noah. โ€œIโ€™m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,โ€ Stewart said in a statement. โ€œHeโ€™s a tremendous comic and talent that weโ€™ve loved working with.โ€

Noah, who grew up in Soweto, is the son of a black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss father andย  commonly discusses his heritage. โ€œMy mother had to be very clandestine about who my father was,โ€ Noah said. โ€œHe couldnโ€™t be on my birth certificate.โ€

As far as stepping into Stewartโ€™s role as host, Noah realizes he has some big shoes to fill and that not everyone is going to be accepting of him at first. โ€œWe live in a world where some people still say Beyoncรฉ canโ€™t sing,โ€ he said. โ€œClearly Iโ€™m not immune to that.โ€

Noah now joins Larry Wilmore as the most recent black man on late-night television. Two black men on late-night television? This is the change late-night TV needs.
