All we can do is roll our eyes. Even if Kendall Jenner doesn’t have the wherewithal to recognize that this might not be a good idea, her people should know, after that Pepsi fiasco, that they might want to pump the brakes on every. single. thing for a minute.
But maybe white folks just don’t care about all that racial-appropriation mumbo-jumbo. Maybe it’s just white noise in a life filled with the coolness of colored men but none of the downside. I don’t know.
What I do know is that Jenner, a decidedly mediocre white American model, probably should not have done the 10th-anniversary cover of Vogue India—especially after she shit the bed on that Pepsi ad less than a month ago.
Why even give the appearance that you are once again erasing women of color from their true and rightful place in culture and history?
One commenter on Instagram wrote, “With all Indian women crowned Miss World, gorgeous Indian actresses and influential women..you chose KENDALL?????? You are a joke!”
Another teen had this to say: “Yes, it’s pretty, but we’re not celebrating white/European beauty standards...we’re trying to celebrate Indian women of color.”
CNN reports that Vogue India released a statement Friday offering a “few clarifications” about the issue.
“In the last 10 years, Vogue India has had only 12 international covers, including Kendall Jenner, in 2017,” the statement said. “Therefore, statistically, 90 percent of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that.”
Riiight.
And Twitter, of course, memed it out:
Somebody please get these people a clue.
