Just when folks thought Rep. Byron Donalds couldn’t sink any lower when it comes to his relationship with President Donald Trump, he keeps proving them wrong. In a Sunday interview with Fox News, Donalds referred to Trump as “daddy” while expressing his excitement for MAGA to return to the White House.
“When Americans see deportations or repatriations happen, they’re gonna be like, ‘Thank you,’” Donalds said per The Hill. “When they see the border closed, they’re gonna say, ‘This is what I voted for.’ When they see peace starting to break out again around the world, they’re gonna be like, ‘This is the stability that we were asking for.’”
Donalds added, “Daddy’s back.”
He is not the only political figure to call Trump a paternal figure. Rep. Lauren Boebert, Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson have also deemed Trump a father-figure. Even MAGA rapper Tom MacDonald and Roseanne Bar have an unbelievably horrible song using this exact verbiage called, “Daddy’s Home.”
However, the fact that a Black man is willingly calling a white man “Daddy” has a racially-tinged connotation, especially considering Trump’s pattern of offensive commentary when it comes to Black folks, which includes accusing Haitian immigrants of eating pets in Ohio and saying that we relate to him because of his infamous mugshot.
Trump’s policy plans, which include destroying the Department of Education, calling for more death sentences nationwide and restricting LGBTQ+ rights, will affect Black people disproportionately.
But Donalds’ latest remark isn’t that surprising since this is the same man that defended the Jim Crow era last year.
“You see, during Jim Crow, the Black family was together,” Donalds said, according to CNN.
“During Jim Crow, more Black people were not just conservative — Black people have always been conservative-minded — but more Black people voted conservatively. And then (the Department of Health, Education and Welfare), Lyndon Johnson — you go down that road, and now we are where we are.”
Donalds also stumped for Trump on his most recent campaign trail, participating in event targeting Black Men with barbershop events that discussed ““the challenges facing Black men today, including economic struggles, community safety, and the negative impact of Kamala Harris’ policies on the Black community.”
Despite his loyalty to Trump, Donalds has yet to be rewarded with a position in his administration. Even though the Florida congressman has so far been left in the dust, we suspect that the shucking and jiving that Donalds is doing will only get worse.
