Police have arrested one person in connection to the deadly shooting at Alabama’s Tuskegee University on the last day of homecoming week Sunday morning, but authorities don’t believe he acted alone.
Jaquez Myrick, 25, is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility. “Myrick was found leaving the scene of the shooting that occurred on the campus of Tuskegee University,” the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. “Myrick was arrested and charged federally with possession of a machine gun.”
The tragic event left one person dead —18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson — and at least 16 people injured. At least 12 were injured by gunfire, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a post on X. CNN reported that Johnson was not a student at the university.
“Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery,” according to the school.
According to local outlet WSFA 12 News, Macon County Sheriff André Brunson said he believes there is more than one suspect.
“If you‘ve seen some of the videos, there was shooting all over the place. So, I think there will be multiple suspects,” he said. “We’re going to deal with it and try to get every last one of them.”
Shots rang out around 1:40 a.m. on the Macon County campus as the school’s centennial homecoming festivities were coming to a close.
Officials request that anyone with information about the shooting reach out to investigators immediately. Authorities also asked possible witnesses to upload any digital files of the incident to the FBI.
Tuskegee University announced that all Monday classes are canceled as police work to process the scene. Grief counselors will be available for students on Monday as well.
