Television’s Shonda Rhimes is joining forces with writer-director Dee Rees for an FX series based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2010 book, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The book chronicles the migration of 6 million African Americans from the South to the North and Western regions between 1915 and 1970.

Although the TV series is still in its early stages, Rees is in the writer’s seat; Rhimes and ShondaLand partner Betsy Beers will be executive-producing the series. Rees’ past projects include the 2011 critically acclaimed film Pariah, which made waves at Sundance. Her latest, Bessie, which stars Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique, airs on HBO May 16.
