Sherman Hemsley, known for his roles as George Jefferson on the groundbreaking sitcom The Jeffersons and as Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen, died today at the age of 74 at his home in El Paso, Texas, according to various news outlets. Hemsley was not married and had no children, and his cause of death is unclear.
After being a mainstay on prime-time television from 1975, when The Jeffersons premiered, to 1991, when Amen went off the air, Hemsley did not fade from view. He worked steadily until 2011, according to IMDB. He was nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his work on The Jeffersons.
