BET founder Sheila Johnson is offering words of advice to media mogul Oprah Winfrey on her OWN channel, as covered in Journal-isms this weekend. In an interview with NPR's Michel Martin, Johnson stated, "The only advice that I say, let's open up your circle a little bit more. You know, we love the Dr. Phils. We love the Suze Ormans. Let's open up. There are other people. And there's also African-American experts out there that I think she should start bringing on her show that can reach even a wider audience." Johnson offered this after Martin commented on the lack of diversity in the programming of the network.
Some are angry that Johnson has the audacity to make comments about OWN after building her wealth with programming on BET that was viewed by many as misogynistic and nihilistic. Maybe Lady O will do a better job of taking advice than Robert L. Johnson and Sheila Johnson did when building their empire? People may not like who said it, but Johnson and Martin raise an important issue from their initial observations about OWN.
