Sex Is Not a Gift, and Other Things You Need to Know About Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, and everyone is gearing up to show the one they love how special they are. I’ve seen conversations all across social media about what people will be giving their significant others, and I thought that now is as good a time as any to clear up a few misconceptions people may have about this holiday that makes people spend over $18 billion just to prove they love someone.

Sex is not a Valentine’s Day gift.

Listen, I love a good, deep dicking just as much as the next girl, and when I get it on the regular, I am most appreciative. That said, sex is not something I would consider to be a gift on Valentine’s Day or any other holiday, for that matter. If we lay up together on the regular, where is the surprise or spontaneity in that? Please don’t offer me or anyone else sex as a gift on Feb. 14. If anything, the sex should be the punctuation at the end of the day. Whether that punctuation is a period, an exclamation point, a question mark or an ellipsis all depends on your level of performance at the end of the night, so make it good.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make it good.

Contrary to what Hallmark, Zales, Kay Jewelers and other retailers would have you think, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make Valentine’s Day special. There are plenty of ways to show love that cost next to nothing. Cook a good meal and plan a romantic night in. Go old school with dinner and a movie of your love’s choice. Get creative with a handmade gift that reflects your relationship in a beautiful way. Write a poem or a romantic letter that expresses how you feel, then print it on some beautiful paper. Whatever you choose, just know that it’s more about the thought and the effort behind it than it is the money you spend on it.

Chocolate and roses are played out.

Chocolate and roses have long been presented as the traditional gift for Valentine’s Day, and I am here to tell you that the shit is played out. Not everyone likes chocolate, and not everyone likes roses. I, for one, hate roses. I do, however, love gerbera daisies. Don’t just go the brainless route. If you are going to do flowers and candy, find out exactly which type of flowers your love likes and what their favorite candy is—it might just be Sour Patch Kids. Whatever your love likes, you want to make sure the gift is unique to them and not generic. That is what is most important.

Don’t let Valentine’s Day be the only time you show love.

This should go without saying, but Valentine’s Day should not be the only time you show the person you love that they are important. They should know what they mean to you every single day of the year. If anything, just like sex at the end of the night, Valentine’s Day should be the exclamation point on your love—something that puts those feelings on a hundred thousand trillion.

Whatever you do to celebrate, enjoy yourself with it. Make sure your loved one enjoys it.

As with anything, if you are going to do it, do it right.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
