News outlets are reporting that NATO tried to assassinate Muammar Qaddafi yesterday in a raid on his Tripoli compound. Some U.S. lawmakers have been pushing for more involvement in Libya, namely Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, along with independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. The political version of the Three Musketeers made their rounds on the Sunday-morning news talk shows to push the White House into stepping up involvement in Libya, while Democrats urged caution.
"My recommendation to NATO and to the administration is to cut the head of the snake off, go to Tripoli, start bombing Qaddafi's inner circle, their compounds, their military headquarters in Tripoli," Graham said on CNN. McCain and Lieberman want the U.S. to reclaim its leadership role in the assault on Libya, while Democratic Sen. Chris Coons called for patience and caution." He stated, "We need to give it a little bit of time. I think the squeeze play that we are applying, more and more pressure on Qaddafi with military action, with an embargo, will eventually succeed."
Wow, urging war on Easter Sunday. It is clear that there is no clear consensus on how to deal with Libya. Some want to charge in and take over, while arguing for smaller government and spending cuts simultaneously. Others want to take a wait-and-see approach. Whatever happens with Libya, the rhetoric will be that President Obama failed in some way. We'll file this under "Damned if you do, damned if you don't."
