Kai Wright of Colorlines takes U.S. Senate hopeful from Nevada Sharron Angle to task for her "blatantly racist" campaign ad against U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has reached out to Latino voters. The ad uses the term "illegals" and "illegal aliens" three times while bright red letters flash across the screen. Each blood red "slur" points out an immigration reform that Reid has proposed. The ad contrasts a group of happy, white high school graduates with menacing images of three Latinos. Angle is clearly taking a page out of the Jesse Helms book of us versus them, which worked well for George H.W. Bush's 1988 presidential campaign. When you don't have much to run on anything other than fear and loathing, we suppose you pull racist imagery out of your bag of tricks. This isn't so shocking when you think of how quickly this country is moving backward in terms of racism, sexism, classism and homophobia. We won't even mention Angle's recent comments that Muslim Americans have used "Sharia law" to take over some U.S. towns, like Dearborn, Mich. Angle wants us to be afraid of so-called illegals. Actually, we're more afraid of her.
