In many African-American families, when we have an important issue to discuss, we gather in the kitchen and bring it to the table. That’s especially true of financial discussions, whether about how to pay the bills, how to send Junior to college or where to start looking for a new job.
The Root Live: Bring It to the Table, hosted by Harriette Cole, digs deep with expert guests for solutions to some of your family’s most vexing financial concerns. Sponsored by Prudential, The Root Live: Bring It to the Table has already addressed such topics as caring for elderly relatives, being a financially successful parent, retiring young, and handling marriage and money.
In the 10th and final episode, which starts at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday at The Root, we ask, “Scared to Start Investing or Planning for Your Estate?” We will speak with three experts on investing who will advise you on how to get started.
Independent financial consultant Gail Marquis—president of G. Marquis World Financial Services—will tell us how much you need to begin investing and how much it takes to hire a financial adviser. We will also speak to sports and entertainment attorney Lee Hutton III, who counsels athletes and entertainers on a range of financial and professional issues. He will speak about having a life plan to protect your money. This topic includes insurance, estate planning, wills and trusts—all tools that safeguard your assets and assist in building wealth.
In our third segment we will speak with rare-coins dealer and investor Ken Smaltz, who shares with us the personal experiences that have influenced his own investments. Smaltz says that he realized he needed to create a life plan—which included considering long-term care—only after his father got sick and he saw the pitfalls of not being prepared.
