Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum, who was previously criticized for saying that President Obama should be anti-abortion because he's African American, is being slammed for comments regarding blacks and welfare.
In a campaign stop in Iowa yesterday, where Santorum is steadily rising through the polls, he said that he would eliminate welfare because he "doesn't want to give black people other people's money so they can live better.
"I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families,” he added. “The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling.”
Santorum must have forgotten that white people also receive public assistance. (In Iowa, for example, 84 percent of welfare recipients are white, while 9 percent are black.) When pressed by a reporter about the comment, Santorum said that he didn't recall why he mentioned African Americans in his welfare diatribe but said he feels it had to do with the movie Waiting for Superman, which chronicled the lives of poor black children.
In a state where the white population is 91 percent, it's no shock that Santorum is resorting to racial comments in an attempt to appeal to the Republican base he is trying to snatch away from Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. The sad part about it all is that those comments might just help him win today's Iowa caucuses.
