In another in the long line of comments by Republicans trying to paint President Obama as an elitist, presidential hopeful Rick Santorum called the commander-in-chief a "snob" on Saturday. Santorum, in an attempt to attract blue-collar, non-college-educated New Hampshire voters, called Obama a "snob" over his views regarding college.
Obama has repeatedly stated that he wants the U.S. to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. When speaking about the controversial No Child Left Behind law earlier this year, he also said he hopes that every student graduates "college- and career-ready."
"The hubris of this president to think that he knows what's best for you. This is the kind of snobbery that we see from those that think they know how to run our lives," Santorum said in a forum at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.
The former Pennsylvania senator believes that the government should have a limited role in education.
"We are leaving so many children behind because they're not ready to go to college — they don't want to go to college, they don't need to go to college," Santorum said on Saturday.
Santorum, who has seven mostly homeschooled children, said if they decided to skip college, he wouldn't be against it.
"I have seven kids. Maybe they'll all go to college. But if one of my kids wants to go and be an auto mechanic, good for him. That's a good-paying job, using your hands, using your mind," he said.
The continued Republican commentary trying to paint President Obama as a snob is ludicrous. While Obama did attend two Ivy League universities, many forget his humble beginnings, growing up in numerous places around the world, but mostly Hawaii. And don't forget the work he did straight out of school on the South Side of Chicago as a community organizer for pennies.
Republicans' continuing efforts to paint Obama as a snob are just another way of calling him an outsider. While those comments may land you press for a few days, they won't get you into the White House. And Santorum has a book of comments that can be considered not just ludicrous but offensive to many.
