In what sounds like a reverse ripped-from-the-headlines plot, a drama about the aftermath of a police shooting involving a black officer and a white teenager in a small Tennessee town has been green-lit by Fox.

Shots Fired, a short event series, reunites Sanaa Lathan with Love & Basketball director Gina Prince-Bythewood, along with her husband, Reggie Rock Bythewood. Lathan’s character is an investigator who is sent to the town by the Department of Justice to work with a special prosecutor. The two of them go on a journey to help bring calm and justice to a town that’s in the middle of a race war.

“Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” said Avid Madden, Fox Broadcasting Co.’s president of Entertainment, in a press release. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands, both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.”
