Sound the horns — one of television's best and most underappreciated actresses, S. Epatha Merkerson, has been cast in an untiltled CBS pilot. The medical drama is being penned by Erin Brockovich writer Susannah Grant, who is also executive-producing the series with seminal filmmaker Jonathan Demme. Demme will also direct the pilot. Merkerson will star opposite Patrick Wilson, who plays a "driven surgeon" haunted by the death of his ex-wife. Merkerson will play his "no-nonsense" administrative assistant.

Merkerson starred as Lt. Anita Van Buren for 17 seasons on Law & Order and won a Golden Globe and Emmy for best actress for her turn as Rachel "Nanny" Crosby in the HBO film Lackawanna Blues. We're glad that she's getting another shot at network television, because she truly deserves it.
