Ruth Madoff says she and her husband Bernie attempted suicide on the Christmas Eve following the ponzi scheme scandal. In an interview with CBS Morley Safer, Madoff says they both took a number of pills including Ambien and possibly Klnopin because the weight of the crimes was too much to bear.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff says in part to Safer.

Before making the suicide pact, Ms. Madoff mailed a sentimental package of jewelry and other items to their son Andrew.

"We took pills and woke up the next day….It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," she says.
