That moment when black women not only say, “fine, I’ll do it,” but also get the necessary backing and support to go forth and prosper.
Every black woman writer knows a fellow black woman writer who has either dreamed up, pitched, or independently produced a black-woman-dominated sketch comedy show. It’s in these diversity programs, in these studio lots, in these executive meetings... the need is real. But, so is good timing. And it looks like Robin Thede and Issa Rae have landed upon it.
According to Deadline, HBO has confirmed a series order for A Black Lady Sketch Show, created by and starring Thede, with Rae serving as executive producer.
Now, that’s a straight-to-the-point show title. Lauren Ashley Smith, who previously served as head writer for BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede will be teaming up with Thede once again with the same title and will co-executive produce, as well.
A Black Lady Sketch Show is just that; a sketch show starring, written and directed by a host of black women. You know, grabbing all of the black women who either serve as the token representative of your favorite white man’s late night talk show—or can’t seem to find work in the white male-dominated industry at all—so we can control this funny narrative. I dig it.
Celebrity guests are also expected to appear on the show.
When Thede’s groundbreaking BET show was canceled, fans wondered what was next, so I’m glad to see she has what looks to be another major project. She’s also reportedly developing an untitled comedy over at ABC.
As for Rae, I notice she’s actually been a bit quieter than usual on social media, but shit, that’s probably because she doesn’t have any damn time for lollygagging. Along with the recently announced Little, the 34-year-old CoverGirl ambassador will be co-starring with Kumail Nanjiani in the rom-com turned murder mystery, Lovebirds, set to debut in 2020. And I’m sure production for Insecure’s fourth season is on the horizon and will be here before we know it. Does she sleep?!
We’re still in the very early stages, so no release date yet for A Black Lady Sketch Show, but I have my snacks ready.
