UPDATE: Usher and the Black Eyed Peas captured the first honors at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, with Usher beating out Alicia Keys and Sade for R&B/soul album of the year.

The 2010 American Music Awards will be filled with an abundance of live performances. Rihanna, Dirty Money, Neyo, Pink, Usher, Carlos Santana, Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock and the Black Eyed Peas will bring some flavor to the AMAs. In recent years, the red carpet has become more important than the actual awards ceremony, but it looks as if the awards show is trying to make music central again. Eminem and country artists Lady Antebellum lead the nominations with five each. Justin Bieber is up for four awards, while Katy Perry and Ke$ha each have three nominations. The nominees are determined by radio play and record sales. The fans vote for the winners. Rihanna will open the show, and the Backstreet Boys will team up with New Kids on the Block to close the show. That would actually be hot with New Edition in the mix. Oh well.
