(The Root) — On the heels of Mat Johnson's successful entry into the comic world with Incognegro and Dark Rain: A New Orleans Story, the author is back with another graphic novel, Right State, released by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics.

Right State, which includes black-and-white illustrations by experienced comic book creator Andrea Mutti, follows the United States' second black president as he vies to stay in the Oval Office. With just a week left before a pivotal campaign speech, the president's re-election bid is put in jeopardy by a secret assassination plot. A right-wing pundit sneaks into a group of extremists in an attempt to beat the odds and save the president.

Right State offers up a page-turning graphic drama that highlights the consequences of very real political extremism. It is available now online and in bookstores.
