A week after racist and homophobic comments were posted on the official Facebook pages of two University of Georgia organizations, students and faculty members gathered in front of the administration office to make their voices heard, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
On Thursday, some 100 people carrying signs attended the protest.
"We want to make it clear that this isn’t about the Facebook posts, but the climate here on campus," said Caroline Bailey, president of UGA’s Black Affairs Council. The council and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center were targets of the derogatory posts, the AJC reports.
The student body initially protested the insensitive comments Nov. 8 outside of the football stadium, and shortly after there was another message on the council's Facebook page.
According to the Red & Black, UGA’s newspaper, the message read, “Yall (racial slur) can protest all you want it just makes you look like the monkeys you are!”
"Students and staff … are hurting because of the statements and images that have been portrayed in social media," Dean of Students Bill McDonald said to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Many take it personally and feel victimized by that. This gives us a chance to support one another,” he said.
