In the ‘80s, Freddie Jackson ruled R&B. His hits “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight” are still essential parts of Black culture. He’s important to our community, which makes the news of his health battle so upsetting. On Wednesday, the singer posted an Instagram video offering fans an update on what he’s been going through.
“After a lot of thought and reflection, I’ve come to a point where I feel I’m ready to talk about a recent chapter in my life,” Jackson said. “I have been diagnosed with kidney disease. This journey has had its challenges but I’ve decided to face it with openness and resilience.”
According to the National Kidney Foundation, chronic kidney disease occurs “when the kidneys have become damaged over time.” Jackson decided to share the news so he could help others dealing with kidney issues. He announced that he’s working with the National Kidney Foundation “to raise awareness and support” for the disease.
“It’s important to me that I share this with you, not just as a part of my personal story, but as a way to make a positive difference,” he said.
He explained how “challenging” the battle has been, but that he’s received support from family, friends and fans.
The replies to Jackson’s video were full of prayers and messages of support from those who’ve dealt with the disease. Shortly after his announcement, social media was buzzing with fans sending him well wishes.
One user saluted his courage in being so open about his condition, writing on X, “Really Brave thing to share. Not sure if I’m strong enough. Continued strength on this new Journey. We love you!”
Another fan recalled how much the singer’s music meant to them, posting, “I love Freddie Jackson. As a kid i used to have my mommy replay Jam Tonight over and over. I pray he beats this.”
Jackson is an R&B artist who hasn’t truly received his due for his impact on Black music. As he goes on this journey, it’s important that we take the time to celebrate his influence and importance to the culture.
