Nominations for the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday from Los Angeles by Jimmy Kimmel and Scandal star Kerry Washington.

From the New York Times:

Continuing a trend of recent years, the nominations reflected the gradual drift of top writers, producers and actors to cable. In the outstanding comedy category, two new HBO sitcoms, "Girls" and "Veep," joined a past HBO nominee, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," as well as three network nominees, ABC's "Modern Family," NBC's "30 Rock" and CBS's "The Big Bang Theory." For the past two years "Modern Family" has taken home the prize.

Just like last year, "Modern Family" was the most-nominated sitcom, with 14 total. Among mini-series, FX's "American Horror Story" was the most-honored, with 17; the History channel's "Hatfields & McCoys" was close behind with 16.

Idris Elba is up for an award for his role in the popular BBC miniseries Luther, and Maya Rudolph for her hilarious SNL imitations. If you missed it, here are all of the black nominees in major Emmy categories:

Idris Elba, Luther (lead actor in miniseries or movie)

Giancarlo Esposito, Breaking Bad (supporting actor in drama series)

Don Cheadle, House of Lies (lead actor in comedy series)

Maya Rudolph, Saturday Night Live (guest actress in comedy series)

Loretta Devine, Grey's Anatomy (guest actress in drama series)

The awards will be handed out on Sept. 23 in a ceremony broadcast on ABC.
