President Obama may be vacationing with his family in Hawaii but that hasn't stopped him from working. On Thursday the president signed into law a defense bill that will crack down on sexual assault in the military, the Associated Press reports via the New York Daily News.
As reported by the Pentagon, some 26,000 members of the military are raped each year. Under the bill, military commanders will no longer be allowed to overturn jury convictions for sexual assault, AP reports.
The bill's signing caps a yearlong campaign by women of the Senate who have urged the president to address the issue of shame in reporting of rapes and sexual assaults, AP reports.
According to AP, the bill also allots $552.1 billion for the regular military budget, and $80.7 billion for overseas operations, including the Afghanistan war. Military personnel will also receive a 1 percent pay raise.
