A 15-month-old girl was killed by a stray bullet while playing inside her New Jersey home on Saturday, a mere two days after moving in, CBS 2 reports.
According to the report, authorities are searching for three men who were last seen wearing black hoodies and firing guns multiple times in the Irvington neighborhood. One bullet hit a woman’s SUV, and two hit a window and an air conditioner unit, missing one resident’s sleeping mother by inches, CBS notes.
However, one bullet went through the walls of the second-floor apartment where Sania Cunningham was bouncing playfully on a bed.
“There were several shots that were fired on the block,” Anthony Ambrose, with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, told the news station. “There were several ballistic evidence that were recovered. One bullet did pierce the house that pierced the baby.”
The toddler was hit in the torso and pronounced dead about half an hour later at a medical center.
Authorities speculate that the family was not the intended target of the shooters. Police and prosecutors are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information.
“Once you found out, it was like, ‘Wow, that’s real sad,’” one neighbor, Chris Johnson, lamented. “And this was in daytime—broad daylight this happened.”
