Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker’s week did not start off the way she wanted. But in the end, she got the last laugh.
Last week, Parker held a news conference outside City Hall to discuss how the City of Brotherly Love would prepare for the coming snow. Before ending the press conference, she attempted to hype up the crowd before the Philadelphia Eagles’ divisional-round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams by shouting a classic “E-A-G-L-E-S” chant.
Except, her spelling was poor, and she instead said “E-L-G-S-E-S, Eagles!” Naturally, the blooper went viral on social media and led to several people making fun of the first Black Mayor of Philly.
Not one of her best moments, but she would soon get her time to redeem herself: On Sunday, after the Eagles demolished the Washington Commanders, 55-23, to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, their second time in three years, Parker was asked by CBS Philadelphia what it means to the city to have their football team on the NFL’s biggest stage.
She said, “It was palpable on today, and now we are heading to the Super Bowl. What an amazing job. We’re ready to win it, baby, win it all. Listen, what a commanding win by our Philadelphia Eagles. They were amazing on today.”
Parker continued, “Watching our leader Jalen Hurts and just the team come together on both the offensive and defensive side, it was just amazing. Guess what I loved today? On today, guess what I learned?”
She then gave a new way to spell Eagles, that nobody could dispute.
The Eagles will face the Kansas City Chiefs for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. This is a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which also marked the first time that two Black quarterbacks faced off in the NFL’s biggest game.
