We all know “black don’t crack,” but this season we’re seeing that in action on a variety of pre-spring magazine covers that celebrate the varied and ageless glory of black beauty.
From 94-year-old Cicely Tyson on the Ava DuVernay-edited Time “Art of Optimism” issue, to Indya Moore on one of five Teen Vogue Young Hollywood covers, this round of covers is truly a tribute to the diversity of #blackgirlmagic (though a few fellas made an impact, too).
Our hands-down fave of the bunch? Well, she’s one of our longtime celebrity crushes, musician Lizzo, whose brilliant bops (the girl can sing, rap and play the flute), ceaseless body positivity and overall badassery are finally getting some well-deserved shine by The Cut, who made her their Spring Fashion issue cover star.
If Lizzo ain’t the epitome of unapologetic blackness-meets-black girl magic, we don’t know who is. But in case you have something—or someone—else in mind, there’s also 2019 Grammy nominees Chloe x Halle glowing on Essence’s first digital cover, for your consideration. (Fun fact: Black female photographer Djeneba Aduayom captured both the sister act and Tyson’s covers month.)
